Initially started as an emergency repair facility Five Star has grown to become a leader in custom hydraulic and pneumatic mill duty cylinder manufacturing and reconditioning! Five Star Hydraulics, located in Portage, Indiana began serving the steel industry in 1977. From our humble beginnings we have grown into a multimillion dollar company supplying many diverse industries from automotive, steel, high-pressure aluminum die casting, agricultural and marine to name a few. In 1977, Tim Bowgren, owner and CEO, saw a need for a quality cylinder reconditioning facility to serve the local steel industry. After working at Midwest Steel himself and experiencing first hand the void of a qualified, service oriented shop, Tim took his vision and started the company with just a handful of employees in a small building at our current location. That original building now houses only our weld shop.
In 2001 Five Star Hydraulics entered into a partnership with NSD Group based in Nagoya, Japan. NSD, founded in 1955, is the world’s leader in design and manufacturing of heavy duty linear and rotary position sensors along with their supporting electronics. Five Star was recognized as the exclusive North American partner for NSD’s Steel Industry sales and service. Since 2001 our partnership has continually grown and NSD’s broad product line has gained a strong following and high regard in the U.S. and Canadian steel industry. NSD’s unmatched durability and quality has time and again solved position sensing issues even in the harshest steel mill environments. Our heavy duty position sensors are used where others succumb to the heat, water, and vibration that are typically seen in the steel industry. NSD’s continuing pursuit of perfection has enabled the world’s steel mills to increase their tonnage, minimize downtime, manufacture a higher quality product and most importantly create a safer working environment for their employees. Daily communication and attention to detail has allowed NSD and Five Star to make the customer’s needs our number one priority at all times.
